Tim Biskup

“I’m always looking for things that I like, but don’t understand. That’s the thing that I keep going back to

In the heart of the Southern California art scene, one name stands out for its unique blend of psychedelic imagery, pop design, and Baroque Modernism – Tim Biskup. Born on September 21, 1967, in Santa Monica, California, Biskup has carved out a remarkable career as a visual artist, illustrator, and designer, captivating audiences with his bold and imaginative creations.

Biskup’s artistic journey began at a young age, with his enrollment in the Fine Art department at Otis College of Art and Design in 1986. However, his time at the institution was short-lived, as he dropped out in 1988, citing frustration with the emphasis on conceptual art rather than practical skills. This early experience would ultimately shape Biskup’s approach to his craft, as he sought to develop a style that was both visually striking and grounded in technical mastery.

Artistic Style:

Biskup’s work is characterized by a muscular, graphic intensity that is fueled by the raw energy of punk rock and influenced by the characters of Disney and Japanese anime. His paintings, sculptures, prints, and toys feature a bold, colorful aesthetic that defies traditional boundaries between fine art and pop culture. Biskup’s artistic practice explores a range of themes, including fear, loss, and pain, which he often conveys through his Baroque Modernist style. His work is also influenced by mid-century modern design, infused with a healthy dose of punk rock sensibility.

Most important works:

Baroque Modernist Paintings

Biskup is known for his vibrant, psychedelic paintings that blend elements of pop design, punk rock, and surrealism. His 2007 “Ether Show” exhibition was a landmark in his career, showcasing this distinctive Baroque Modernist style.

Geometric Abstract Paintings

In recent years, Biskup has developed a more precise, geometric abstract style using polygons and facets. Works mentioned in this style include “Excavation” (2012) and “Former State” (2011), which reflect his interest in meditation and mathematical processes.

Symmetrical Drawings and Paintings

Biskup has been creating a series of symmetrical drawings and paintings, using a grease pencil on construction paper as a starting point. He then translates these drawings into paintings, experimenting with different approaches to add texture and bring the images to life.

Spiritual Iconography

Biskup’s recent work has taken on a sense of “spiritual iconography”, with elements of “tree of life” energy, faces, and weapon-like shapes emerging in his abstract compositions.
