Josh Agle, better known by his nickname “Shag”, is an American painter, illustrator and designer known for his distinctive mid-century modern aesthetic. Career and Success

He began his career as a graphic designer and illustrator, achieving early success designing record covers and magazine illustrations while in college . His first major break came in 1995 when one of his paintings was included in an exhibition, catching the attention of influential gallery owner Billy Shire . Since then, Shag has had numerous solo and group exhibitions around the world, and has collaborated with major brands like Disney, the Venetian Casino, and the Georgia Aquarium .

In 2010, Shag opened his first retail store in Palm Springs, California, selling limited edition prints, merchandise, and other products featuring his artwork . Additional Shag stores have since opened in Las Vegas and West Hollywood . Shag’s work is now highly sought after by collectors, and his distinctive aesthetic has made him an influential figure in the world of pop art and mid-century modern design.

Artistic style:

Shag’s paintings are characterized by their clean, two-dimensional lines, vivid colors, and narrative-driven scenes depicting idealized 1950s and 1960s lifestyles . He draws inspiration from vintage magazine illustrations, jazz album covers, and experimental animation from that era . Shag also takes inspiration from real-life situations and the people and places he encounters in his Southern California surroundings.

Most important works:

Shag-Death’s Unending Vacation (2003): This original silkscreen print is one of Shag’s most iconic and sought-after works. It depicts a stylized, retro-futuristic scene of a skeleton relaxing poolside with a cocktail, embodying Shag’s signature blend of humor, consumerism, and mid-century modern design.

Supersonic Swingers (2000): Shag’s first published book, this collection of his paintings and illustrations helped establish his distinctive visual style and narrative-driven approach. It showcased his talent for creating idealized, vibrant scenes of 1950s and 60s lifestyles.

Disney Collaborations: Shag has worked on several high-profile collaborations with Disney, designing artwork for theme park attractions, merchandise, and special events. These projects have allowed him to apply his retro aesthetic to beloved Disney characters and settings, further expanding his influence
