Alex Gross

“The future we imagined a generation or two ago, where we would have robot servants and flying cars, is not the one we got. We got a much more disturbing one, wherein most people need to be connected all of the time, and where no one can pay attention for very long.”

Alex Gross is an American visual artist, born on August 30, 1968, in Roslyn Heights, New York. He is known for his contributions to the Pop Surrealism movement, creating oil paintings that explore themes such as globalization, consumerism, and the complexities of modern life. Gross graduated with honors from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, in 1990, and has since established a significant career in both fine art and illustration.

Artistic style:

Gross’s work often combines elements of pop culture with critical commentary on contemporary society. His paintings reflect a fascination with technology, consumerism, and the impact of these forces on human interaction and identity. He describes his art as a visual document of the current era, addressing both its beauty and its darker aspects. His notable series, Future Tense, showcases a world overwhelmed by advertising and technology, highlighting issues like internet addiction and the superficiality of modern existence. A pivotal moment in Gross’s artistic journey occurred in 2000 when he received a fellowship from the Japan Foundation, allowing him to explore Japanese art and culture. This experience significantly influenced his aesthetic, leading to a fusion of Eastern and Western imagery in his work. His art has also drawn inspiration from comic books, which he cherished from a young age, and he incorporates references to classic pop culture in his pieces.
